Brief Description of the life of Freedom Fighter Kana Kunhikannan Nair (Nambiar)
Mr. Kana Kunhikannan Nair (Nambiar), S/o. (late) Shri Derman Nair and Smt. Kana Parvati Amma is a prominent Freedom Fighter, Veteran Communist Leader & Social Worker. He was born on 20th September, 1922 at Alappatamba, near Payyanur in Kannur District, Kerala State. He is a living Freedom Fighter who met Mahatma Gandhi on 12th January, 1934 at Payyanur.
Taking a leaf from the speech of Gandhiji, he knew it was rewarding to work with people at the grassroot level. He was a person drawn into the vortex of Freedom Struggle. Mr. Nambiar actively participated in 'Salt Satyagraha' at Uliyath Kadavu (near Payyanur) alongwith Mr. N.C. Sekhar, Mr. C.H. Govindan Nambiar etc. In 1939 he took part in 'Civil Disobedience Movement' with C.H. Govindan Nambiar and Mr. A.V. Kunjamboo of Karivellur. On 15th September, 1940 he was taken into custody by British Police while participating in 'Morazha Struggle'. He took part in 'Kayyur Struggle' in 1941 against feudalism. Shri E.K. Nayanar (former Chief Minister of Kerala) remained underground during 1941-42 at Mr. Kana Kunhi Kannan Nair's residence in connection with 'Kayyur' incident.
In 1942, he activately participated in 'Quit India Movement' alongwith Shri T.K. Raju of Kozhummal. Police followed him to arrest upto Railway Station, but he escaped and forced to go underground (at 'Thatikkatavu') for more than seven months to evade arrest. He took part in 'Malabar Police Strike' in 1946 and was beaten up by MSP brutally. In 1946 while participating in 'Anti Imperialist Rally', he was captured by British Police at Echilamvayal (near Kankol). Mr. Nair was sent from Station to Station (Payyanur, Taliparamba, Irikkur) and was treated very cruelly by the police which led loss of hearing capacity of one ear . He was detained into the custody in the sub jail at Taliparamba with Shri K.P.R. Rayarappan and Shri M.C.R. Then he was put to trial on 31st December, 1946 at Payyanur T.B. in the presence of Sub Inspector of Police Shri Kumar by the Tellichery RDO Shri Bhaskar 21 and punished for three years 'Nalla Natappu'. He had to attend the station every day to put signature in the register. His absence was treated unkindly.
Apart from that he propagated 'Khadi Charka Nool' and implemented it in more than 10 houses. The songs which were sung by him during Freedom Struggle was widely appreciated. In 1948 he participated in 'Nelletuppu Strike' alongwith Shri C.K. Kunhi Raman. He was involved in the programmes for preparing the draft plan at Peringome Kachery alongwith revenue authorities which was implemented through five year plan introduced by Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1941. He was a close associate of Shri A.K.G., Shri EMS Namboothirippad, Shri E.K. Nayanar, Shri Krishna Pillai, Shri AV Kunhamboo, Shri Keraleeyan, Shri Sukumar Azheekkode etc. He was always with the people in developmental programmes. He was in the front in the construction of Vishnu Nambeesan Smaraka Higher Secondary School (former Mathil Govt. High School), Cheruppara Vayanasala etc. He was an informal teacher in Nhekly School. He also served as Director of Mathil Service Sahakarana Sangham. He was honoured and felicitated by the Hon'ble President of India in the presence of various dignitaries of the country in the 'AT HOME' function on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Quit India Movement on 9th Aug 2013 at Rashtrapathi Bhavan, New Delhi hosted by the Hon'ble President of India.
